Mount Vernon Middle School is a 3 year middle school in the Mount Vernon City School District. It is the only middle school in the district. The official mascot is a yellow jacket, (previously a lion but changed in 2008), and the official school colors are orange and black.[1] The school received national attention with the firing of John Freshwater, an 8th grade science teacher accused of branding a student with a Christian cross and teaching creationism in the classroom.[2][3]
